DR. DEEPANKAR CHOUDHURY, currently an Associate Professor at Department of Civil Engineering of IIT Bombay, India had completed B.E. (Civil Engg.) in 1997 from Jadavpur University, Kolkata with GOLD Medal as 1st Class 1st Honours Rank holder in Civil Engineering and 2nd in the entire University among all branches of Engineering. After having industrial experience for one year as Graduate Design Engineer at Development Consultants Limited (DCL), Kolkata, he had joined for M.E. in Civil Geotechnical Engineering at Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. He had completed M.E. in 2000 with GOLD Medal and Senate Commendation from IISc Bangalore as 1st Class 1st with Distinction in Civil Engineering department and 1st Rank in the entire institute in Engineering. Dr. Choudhury had completed his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering in the area of Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering in 2002 from IISc, Bangalore and received Best Ph.D. Thesis Award (Prof. G.A. Leonard’s Award) in India among all Indian Institutes and Universities for calendar years 2001 and 2002 from Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS), New Delhi. Soon after completion of Ph.D., Dr. Choudhury was absorbed as a Lecturer in Department of Civil Engineering of IIT Kanpur in November 2002, from where he has moved to IIT Bombay as an Assistant Professor in July 2003. At IIT Bombay, he has been promoted to Associate Professor in April 2007, at a tender age of 32, for his remarkable contributions in research, teaching and development activities.

DR. DEEPANKAR CHOUDHURY has made significant contribution in the area of research, teaching and research development in the field of ‘Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering’. Simple and practical design theories, principles and charts have been proposed by him for the earthquake resistant design of geotechnical structures like retaining wall, foundations, anchors, piles, slopes, landfills, waterfront retaining structures, reinforced soil-structures etc. He is the pioneer in the proposition and wide application of pseudo-dynamic approach for the earthquake resistant design of geotechnical structures. He has already authored/co-authored about total 75 technical papers among which 40 are in referred journals and 35 in conferences in his career of about last 6 years. He has developed and started two new courses on Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering for both UG and PG level students at IIT Bombay and also conducted several short-term training courses for college teachers and practicing engineers in the area of Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering. His all sponsored research projects are showing the application of research development in the area of Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering.

In India, Dr. Choudhury has received almost all possible Young Scientist/Engineer Awards from National Professional Societies/Academies like INSA, INAE, ISCA, NASI, IEI, DAE, DST etc. He has also received International Awards from IACMAG, USA and other recognitions as Visiting Scholar/Fellow/Scientist at UC Berkeley, USA; University of Wollongong, Australia; National University of Singapore. He is editorial board member of two journals and reviewer of several journal papers. Dr. Choudhury is the fellow/member of several national and international professional societies like ASCE, ISSMGE, GEER, GI-ASCE, IGS, ISET, ISTE, ISCA, IndACM, NASI, IEI and he acted as expert member for several academic and administrative works. Dr. Choudhury received supports from his Professors of IISc and Jadavpur University, colleagues of IIT Bombay and main backbone which is the research group of his current and former M.Tech. and Ph.D. students.
